The College Board Handbook contains objective data, such as the number of students enrolled, tuition and fees, and average SAT and ACT scores for every four year college and every two year college in America.
The Handbook does not attempt to "rate" colleges or to provide subjective impressions of them...just lots of numbers. But, numbers are very useful. If one college reports it has 5,000 students and 500 full-time faculty and another college reports having 5,000 students and just 200 full-time faculty, you know which college is taking education seriously and which college just take your money.
It is the ONLY book to contain data on every college and the data is the most reliable available from any book. That is why you find this book on the desk of every high school guidance counselor and in every library.
The weakness of the book is that some colleges refuse to provide SAT and ACT data, or provide outdated information about tuition and fees...that is a problem the College Board has no control over. And, because of the massive amount of data collected, there are many typos in the book...if tuition is listed as $43 per year...suspect a typo.
BUT, if you have access to the internet, you do NOT need this book. The College Board website makes all of the information in this book available for free. And, the website often corrects typos that appear in the book. BONUS: the College Board website offers a substantial amount of information about each college that is NOT available in the book.
To use the website, just "Google" for "College Board Occidental" and you will find the link to the appropriate page for Occidental College.
