Book of Majors 2014: All-New Eighth Edition

Author: The College Board | Language: English | ISBN: 1457300222 | Format: PDF

Book of Majors 2014: All-New Eighth Edition Description

The Book of Majors 2014 helps students answer these questions: What’s the major for me? Where can I study it? What can I do with it after graduation?

Revised and refreshed every year, this book is the most comprehensive guide to college majors on the market. In-depth descriptions of 200 of the most popular majors are followed by complete listings of every major offered at more than 3,800 colleges, including four-year and two-year colleges and technical schools.

The 2014 edition covers every college major identified by the U.S. Department of Education—over 1,200 majors are listed in all. This is also the only guide that shows what degree levels each college offers in a major, whether a certificate, associate, bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate. The guide features:

• insights—from the professors themselves—on how each major is taught, what preparation students will need, other majors to consider and much more.

• updated information on career options and employment prospects.

• the inside scoop on how students can find out if a college offers a strong program for a particular major, what life is like for students studying that major, and what professional societies and accrediting agencies to refer to for more background on the major.

My daughter is a junior in high school, and needed help with what the different colleges offer. This was a lot easier than calling the different universities.
By Denise Dunn
With the Rising Senior not making up his mind on what he wants to do, I decided to get this book to help him. I had a chance to read a few parts of the book and here is my early view. in terms of organization, i think the book does an OK job of giving a broad but shallow overview of the majors that are available in the world. However, the amount of insight you gain by reading the 2-3 pages per major is somewhat limited. I understand that the authors are trying to cover the breadth instead of going in-depth. The second (and the larger) section of the book lists the college in _every_state_ for each major. While this information is interesting, it is hard to make use of the same. Key classification provided with each college is if they offer an associate/certification/undergrad/masters degree. Some of the common topics (e.g. Accounting) has pages of college names and it becomes daunting to figure out what to do with that information overload.

It is nearly a 1000 page volume and a typical end user will possibly end up using 10-20 pages of this book. Perhaps this may be a better book to browse "online" .
