This is pretty much the only chicken book you'll need. I wish I'd had it years ago, when I first became a chicken owner. It covers topics ranging from what you need to know to raise happy, healthy chickens to what to do when you've got a sick bird on your hands. It includies information on how to house your chickens and what to feed them, as well as what to look for to indicate that you could be doing things better. But it really excels at providing detailed information about what to do when things aren't going so well and you find yourself with a sick chicken or worse. It provides extensive information about specific pests and diseases, but it also guides you through the process of figuring out what might be going on when you're not so sure. And it walks you through a number of basic procedures using pictures and detailed descriptions that I haven't seen anywhere else.
The information is provided to meet multiple levels of comfort and experience with handling chickens. If you're a newbie or squeamish, you can use the book to give you an indication of what's going on and what you might do better in the future, or prompt you to collect information that will be helpful to your vet. And if you're more experienced, you'll have step by step instructions for a number of procedures, including routine, preventive measures that will be helpful in maintaining a healthy flock, all the way to basic first aid and medical procedures - even how to conduct a chicken autopsy.
I thought this book might come in handy as a reference for when my chickens got sick, but ended up reading it from cover to cover, discovering interesting tidbits and handy tips all the way through.
