In late 2010 I stumbled upon a clean eating program called The 21-Day Sugar Detox that was in e-book form at the time... I had already been eating mostly clean for about 6 months, but this looked like just the program I needed to jump-start myself into the new year. I completed my first round in January 2011 and since then have done it 3 more times.. and WOW. Now there is this FANTASTIC book!
Not being much of an e-book fan to begin with, I am so glad Diane decided to put this in hard-copy format and ADD a ton of stuff not even in the e-book! 225 pages (not counting the VISUAL index, regular index or sources!) of well-written information about sugar and carbs, how they work in our body, what they can potentially do to us, how stress plays into it all and affects our hormones (which can help us NOT reach our goals!)... plus recipes, recipes, RECIPES! Diane has a way with making the most simple recipes taste outright amazing. Asian-style meatballs, Lamb & Chorizo Chili, Shepherd's Pie, ginger-garlic chicken, smoothies, even an apple crumble and doughnuts!
I know what you're thinking.. how is this a "detox" - this sounds like such good food! Yes, Mr/Mrs Reader... it is. You will not feel deprived and once your body gets over the initial sugar cravings you'll experience what I have: better sleep, clearer skin (hello adult acne!), no afternoon energy slump, less bloating or pressure in the gut, no "hangries". Plus, you will have gained a new-found appreciation for how food can cure almost anything - the RIGHT food.
Besides good content, the layout and design of the book is very easy on the eyes.
I've already been incorporating Diane's first book, Practical Paleo, into my practice and the 21-Day Sugar Detox book is an exciting addition! Clients love Diane's practical way of teaching them how food works in their body and it really helps inspire and motive them to be compliant.
Although I believe Paleo is an extremely effective nutritional approach, I have clients that are not ready for that sort of change yet, so, as a practitioner, I need to respect that. One of the many reasons I am so excited about the 21-Day Sugar Detox, while the approach is still whole food based, it's not specifically a Paleo nutrition plan (although there is a level for that). It is a straightforward, approachable solution for anyone to get started on a new way to eating that can truly change their life.
Being able to teach with this book will save me a lot of time and effort because much of the work I would normally do for a client is already done. The 21-Day Detox book is a step-by-step guide that includes a little background on the whys, a self-quiz to assess which level you should start from, very clear Yes/No foods, suggestions on where and what to buy, meal plans, recipes, downloadable shopping lists, journals for tracking, and so much more. It also contains modifications for pescatarians (vegetarians that include seafood), those that have higher energy needs such as pregnant and nursing moms, athletes, and modifications for those with autoimmune conditions. I also love the small size, which is perfect to bring along while you shop and travel.
