Tough Cookie Description
When Depression-era private investigator Maggie Sullivan is invited to dine with a millionaire, she doesn’t expect the first course to be a gun in her face. It draws her into a gold-plated web of theft, revenge, double crosses and murder.
A big-time swindle has made fools of some of the city’s wealthiest businessmen. The man behind it has vanished. When Maggie begins asking questions, he reappears – dead in the river. But she’s already learned too much. Someone’s out to silence her too.
Armed with her .38 and a nip of gin, Maggie closes in on a killer as a mobster offers a hint, a cop unsettles her with his chemistry, and a woman with deadly potential plays a game by her own rules.
Whether you favor hard-boiled or cozy, you'll add Maggie Sullivan to your list of favorite women sleuths.

When I discovered
No Game for a Dame (Maggie Sullivan mysteries), Myer's first book in this series featuring Maggie Sullivan, it was a wonderful surprise. I loved that Maggie was a female private detective along the lines of the hard-boiled male protagonists in Chandler and Hammett that could really hold her own with the tough guys. In this sequel, Maggie Sullivan starts out with a missing person case that turns quickly to murder, and I was again swept away to the late 1930s mean streets of Dayton, Ohio.
Tough Cookie (which can be read as a stand alone) has all the elements you look for in a hard-boiled mystery: good old-fashioned detective footwork, a wealthy client, a ditzy dame, loyal servants, smooth-talking lotharios, hard liquor bottles in the desk drawer, fast cars, and gun-play. I couldn't put the book down, and while I guessed "who done it," I didn't care, because I was having so much fun, right down to the end that totally surprised me with a twist. I highly recommend Tough Cookie, and I can't wait for the next installment.

Maggie Sullivan is back and better than ever. After reading the first book in this series, No Game For A Dame, I was completely hooked. Tough Cookie did not disappoint.
Maggie is hired by a very rich man to find the guy who swindled him out of a good bit of money. Days after Maggie starts asking questions, the man she's been looking for ends up dead. This story is filled with twist and turns through-out the book that's sure to keep you on the edge of your seat.
While I did figure out who the bad guy was, there was still a big twist at the end that I did not see coming at all!
In Tough Cookie, we also find out more about Officer Mick Connelly's past. The sparks between him and Maggie are stronger than ever. The chemistry between them doesn't take anything away from the mystery of the story. I found it adds a depth to Maggie's character and gives a much better understanding of her.
The Maggie Sullivan series brings the past to life. I love the way the author paints the era with such detail that you actually feel like you're right there with the characters. I can't wait for the next installment.
I highly recommend this book. Maggie Sullivan is intelligent, tough, and doesn't back down from a fight. She's just what I look for in a female P.I.
