Mayim's Vegan Table: More than 100 Great-Tasting and Healthy Recipes from My Family to Yours Description

Review

Forward, “5 Books to Munch on in 2013,” 1/4/13“It was only a matter of time before the world’s most high-profile kosher vegan turned to cookbook authorship, and so it is that Blossom’s recipes will grace bookstores this year.”

RedbookMag.com, 2/3/14
“Mayim’s Vegan Table…isn’t your run-of-the-mill book of recipes. It’s also a perspective-shifting manual for people looking to eat a more plant-based diet in the interest of health and eco-friendliness.”

EverydayHealth.com, 2/10/14
“Includes a handy, helpful list of ingredients and gadgets that make whipping up vegan meals a breeze.”

Jewish Business News, 2/13/14
“Bialik displays her in-depth knowledge of Veganism, providing in-depth, but understandable explanations of how to lead a vegan lifestyle from her own personal experience as a vegan, going back close to twenty years as well as bringing up her two sons as vegans also.”

Forward.com, The Jew and the Carrot blog, 2/18/2014

“While this book isn’t going to have foodies rapturously tweeting about its mouth-watering recipes, it could just get your kids to eat more veggies, which, I can imagine, in some circles of exasperated parents, might be just the kind of cookbook one is looking for.”

The Weiser Kitchen, 2/18/2014

“Always family-forward and always easy, this book is a wonderful resource for any vegan kitchen and well beyond…A well-written, well-researched, and honest book.”

PETA UK, 2/19/2014

“Packed full of healthy, plant-based recipes to feed your family!”

PETA.org, 2/25/2014

“This book is perfect for those who are looking for inexpensive, healthy meals to feed the whole family.”

Waterloo Chronicle, 2/26/14

“Along with sharing more than 100 easy plant-based recipes, from Mediterranean and Asian-inspired salads to comfort foods like kugel and matzoh ball soup, [Bialik] also offers tips and strategies for easy meal planning, while debunking myths and misconceptions about raising vegan kids.”

I really like this cookbook. I was a little disappointed in it when it arrived, but I've taken the time to explore it and find that I like it more every day. However, it's not perfect.

This cookbook offers a good mixture of vegan recipes and nutrition basics that will be helpful to those new to the vegan lifestyle, especially parents that want to incorporate this type of eating into family meals. I have sampled several recipes that turned out very well, but not all of the recipes appeal to me. One recipe appears to be missing an ingredient. Accidents happen!

Why go vegan? The authors provide basics on environmental issues and ethics behind vegan choices, without being pushy. I like that and I think it will help non-vegans become more curious without being pushed away. I also appreciate the casual and friendly approach that is conveyed throughout the book. It felt comfortable.

The recipes are good, but not necessarily new or exciting. Many of the recipes are for home-style comfort foods that will appeal to families. These include recipes such as enchilada casserole, chili, French toast, and plenty of yummy desserts. If that's the type of food your family eats, and most probably do, this cookbook will help provide healthier alternatives to traditional recipes.

I love cookbooks with photos, but I'm sorry to say that the photos in this book disappointed me. The style seems outdated and I think it makes the food look bland. If I were flipping through this book in a bookstore, I would probably put it back on the shelf. The internet is filled with avid food bloggers that have mastered perfect food photography. I'm sure that not everyone will agree with me, but I'm a nut for good food photography and I felt this one was lacking. I'm sorry!
